Candles can be a serious fire hazard if not used properly. The following tips are to help minimize risk when burning candles in your home.
- Burn candles away from things that can catch fire (like bedding, curtains, decorations and clothing).
- Keep burning candles out of reach of children and pets.
- Follow the burning instructions on the caution sticker on your candle.
- Make sure your wick is trimmed to between 2mm – 3mm before each light. If the wick is too long, the wax will not pull up the wick and could extinguish, creating ashy ends. The melted wax is the fuel to the flame! If a wick is too large, it could also let off soot. Be sure to gently snap off the ash or burnt wood along the top edge of the wick with your fingers and dispose, then light as usual. Our wick trimmers or even nail clippers are a great tool to get your wick to the optimal height.
- Always burn candles in a well ventilated area.
- Discontinue burning your candle when 1/2 an inch of wax remains and/or the wick detaches and moves off center.
- Wick clips are set to a specific safety height to keep the flame a ½ inch from the bottom of the glass. It is completely normal to have wax left over in the bottom of your candle. The wick can move off center if it was exposed to very cold temperatures, such as being shipped in winter. If the candle has shrunk in transit, the wick will no longer be attached to the glass. Be very mindful if your candle is loose, to monitor when there is an inch of wax left so that the wick does not slide to the side of the glass. If the flame touches the side of the glass, it can cause it to crack and break.
